Pluck up your Hearts, bow your Knees, and audite quae dicis Dominis.

Thursday, Octobris 3.

We came from Briel to Rotterdam, in a hoy of Amsterdam to go within land. There, we lay all night.

Friday, Octobris 4.

We came to Tergowd, hora 3 a meridie, where we lay within the town in the ship.

Saturday, Octobris 5.

We came by Harlem to Amsterdam, and lay before the town all night in the ship.

Tuesday, Octobris 8.

We sailed from Amsterdam to Encusen, and Edmond Hilton went with my goods by sea toward Dansk.

Wednesday, Octobris 9.

We set off from Encusen early, but by reason of a contrary wind, we came very late to Herlinghem.

Friday, Octobris 11.

We went within land in little scutes from Herlinghem (by Frainker) to Lewarden.

Saturday, Octobris 12.

From Lewarden, we came to Dockum (in small boats), about 3 of the clock after noon.

Sunday, Octobris 13. Apud Dockum in Frisia Occidentali.

Dee - Diu chrystallus tanquam lapis nigerrimus apparuit.

For a long time, the crystal appeared as it were a stone, black as black can be. At length, in that stone's deep darkness appeared a naked man upon a cross, crucified but still living, the wood beneath his hands still flowing with blood. He was wrapped in linen strips from the chest down, the loose ends hanging about his knees, soaked with blood, as his five wounds, like the wounds of Christ, dripped blood.

Suddenly, this vision sank into darkness, and a golden curtain was drawn.

('Cortina' could also be read as 'cauldron' or 'tripod', which would also fit with the tone of the vision; 'curtain' here is liturgical, relating to the curtains drawn across the tabernacle in a church sanctuary when the consecrated host is present, which is probably what is meant here.)

The stone now seems very much larger, and there stands one like Michael with a sharp sword, flames flickering along both edges.

God most high, wonderful and just (Michael says this on his knees), who manifests your judgements as witness on earth to your greater glory, and for the consolation of your Elect, and to the despair of those who crucify anew each day our only-begotten Lord, saviour of all humanity, the light of the world.

Behold the gates of iniquity held ready. Lift your eyes, and see how the children of men are made fools, dwelling in darkness, the earth sealed with their destruction because they have forsaken God, and still cut apart the world's salvation, Jesus Christ (Michael kisses the hilt of his sword) by their blasphemous offerings.

Woe unto them we chase down in hatred, and woe unto those who dwell among them, because they too are defiled by their iniquity. When you pass among them, pray, because your enemies are many, and this I tell you is the word of the Lord of Hosts, king of the faithful. Put aside childish things, and live and walk the ways of prudence, dwell with God in his house; for the house of the iniquitous is not the dwelling place or seat of prophets, and neither can the Lord's name be profaned even among a profane people who have abandoned their high status.

Thus says the Lord, I am the Just God, and I have sworn that not one of them lives, not a single soul. How did the beasts come to be, of whom it is written, Without the knowledge of God, men are but cattle? Those who are devoured and consumed by fire will sit in judgement over that people.

(The original text has 'non est habitatio vel sedes prophanis', which I suspect ought to be 'sedes prophatis').

Blessed and sanctified, and for evermore praised art thou, [ . . . ] judge, which hast said and reignest forever.

Dee - Si multiplicati sunt inimici nostri, etc.

Our enemies multiply, etc.

Kelly - He is gone.

Should our enemies multiply due to our sins, and our struggle become more trying, let pray God in his mercy also multiplies our strength, etc.

Gabriel - Pluck up your hearts, bow your knees, and audite quae dicis Dominis, Thus saith the Lord, if you will prevail against the wicked, and rejoice among the sanctified, you must observe and keep such commandments as are ordained by the God of Truth, unto those that are partakers of his Covenant.

Kelly - Gabriel also noted these Commandments in a pair of Tables, after he had pronounced them.

Gabriel - Ask counsel of God. Remember it:

Be mild.

Fast and pray.

Be charitable.

Use true friendship in the service of God.

Persevere to the end.

Are not these Commandments necessary to be kept of all Christian men?

Dee - They are undoubtedly.

Gabriel - And must necessity be kept of those that are faithful.

[To be continued.]

Note: 'Diu chrystallus tanquam lapis nigerrimus apparuit. Tandem in ipsa lapidis nigredine, apparuit homo nudus crucifixus super crucem' might have a bearing on the discussion regarding what kind of 'shewstone' the pair were using to scry. 'Apparuit' tells us the crystal appeared to become a deep black stone, not that it actually was; indeed, if it were, why mention it at all?

I believe what is being described here is a clear crystal, suspended or set upon the table, which darkens as Kelly gazes into it.

Se riza el aire gris.

The field of olives opens and closes like a fan. Above the grove the sky is sunk the rain is dark the stars are cold.  A trembling in the rushes and darkness falls on the riverbank. A ripple through the grey air.  Olive trees laden with screams. A flock  of captive birds move their long, long tails in the shadows.  FGL (1931) PSY (Feb. 2025)
